Literature Text

Every day was pain for me, nobody else noticed or cared. I had always been bullied by people for my short size. What does one expect in a world meant for tall people? I hated it. This was my world at the age of fourteen. Everything around me seemed to be bigger. I tried to be the best in academics but in this future world they needed farmers and not writers. People thought the arts to be useless now especially since it served no purpose in trying to feed a world of twelve billion. If you didn’t have strong arms and couldn’t tend the fields you were nobody, simple as that.

Tending fields was something I didn’t want to do. I found writing stories to be entertaining and a way to escape the dystopian world I lived in. My parents thought I was wasting my time, they tried to enroll me at least in military school (since we were at war for water), but I tried my best to stop them. It didn’t work. I was to leave soon.

To escape the hell that I live in, no thanks to my parents and grandparents for their negligence, I typically searched the web for interesting articles and although many websites have long since been taken down I found one that caught my interest: it was for a game that came out a long time ago called Pokémon. Video games were something people had very little time or energy to play anymore, and I happen to come across it by luck. According to the author on the page Pokémon was something that used to be very popular but began to fade away when electricity started becoming too expensive for common people to have. Just to let the reader know: my family is rich, if you can even call anybody rich anymore. I came across a gallery and examined the art of one of the games and there appeared to be a dragon-like creature. I went through pages upon pages before finding the name of the creature, Charizard.

Years passed and I continued to secretly write about this creature in my unpublished short stories. Then came the time when I was eighteen that my apartment was engulfed by yet another dust storm, yet this one was bigger than any I’ve ever seen. The electricity in our apartment was cut off and it wouldn’t be fixed for a long time, and paper was scarce, so writing for me ended indefinitely. I managed to print a picture of Charizard before we lost our lights a few days earlier. We were later told that electricity would no longer be supplied to our apartment, and to think we lived in the richest district of our ruined city.

Several years passed and I moved out after my parents succumbed to illness and I lived alone, no surprise for many people. I wasn’t saddened to find that I was to live in one of the dirtiest almost abandoned apartment complex in the poorest part of town.

I didn’t have a job, I couldn’t write, and I was still bullied for my size. It was at this time in my life I decided to take a “nature walk” across the city (since forests were long since cut down in our state).

It was at this time my watery eyes caught sight of a dim light in an alleyway. It wasn’t odd or anything and it usually meant someone was cooking food in a broken television set, but the light got brighter to the point that I my curiosity overwhelmed me. “Keep walking” I said to myself twice but the light felt so unnatural now that I had to check it out. By the time I reached it I was confused. Was it some sort of hologram? Is this what they called a firefly? I was suddenly thrown back as the light darkened and became a shadowy figure. It appeared to be wearing dark robes and its face was hidden as it gazed down at me. Then it brandished its hands and a small necklace appeared like magic! It was unbelievable!

“I am the wishkeeper. I give wish necklaces to those who need it the most.” The voice said.

I had thought to myself, why me when there are many other people suffering the same predicament.

“You were guided here by me as all the others have been but they moved away without much interest.” It said. Did it just read my mind!?

It gives me the necklace while I am still on the rough dirt and then begins to disappear.

“Wear the necklace. You have one wish…so choose wisely.” It cackled before it could no longer be seen.

I remained on the floor, baffled at what just occurred. Nothing like this has ever happened before anywhere…right? I thought magicians were extinct, a lost art, right? I bring the necklace up to my face.

I went straight home, locked my door, and set the necklace down on my dusty desk. I adjusted the height of the seat and I sat down. I focused on it for a long time. A wish, why did I even bring this stupid thing with me, maybe because it was glowing…

I tried to find out how it worked. Maybe it was one of those expensive toys given to rich children to make them feel better?

I decided to test it out even though it sounded absurd, but the thought of magic captivated me. In a world that had no magic in it, it seemed interesting that a magician gave me this even though it was probably a simple trick.

My thoughts, for a moment, drifted back to the times I was bullied for my height. I had thought to myself that it would be cool to be tall and scary just like the world has been to me. I reached into my desk drawer and took out the fading picture of Charizard and rested it next to the unearthly necklace. Several moments passed before I decided to put on the necklace as the person said and I stared at the Charizard picture and muttered a wish.

Then, the necklace glowed brighter than before until it engulfed the entire room with me in it. I shielded my eyes in time and when I reopened them I found that the necklace was gone. Confused I looked around for it but then a sudden twitch on my hand distracted me. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw my fingers begin to fuse! I stood up in a panic and yelled.

“The hell!?”

I tried to grab one hand with the other as huge white talons began to grow on both. Then, I could see the pink flesh around my hands harden into orange scales. My feet began to feel uncomfortable before I sat down on the floor to try and take my shoes off, but the claws that grew from my feet did the job for me.

It was at this point that my body began to grow much to my surprise. The size of my biceps increased and they were soon conquered by the same orange skin: my sleeves had no chance and were torn apart easily. I didn’t think my wish would actually become a reality! I didn’t actually think that my wish would turn me into a Charizard! I didn’t know if I should be scared, happy, or what…it felt too surreal and the confusion added to my uncertainty.

Despite my startling muscle growth my shirt began to tighten as my belly size increased quickly and tore the front part of my shirt to pieces. From what I discovered my belly was now beige in color. Pressure caused me to look behind me as a fifth appendage began to make itself known. It only took seconds before the back of my pants were obliterated by a reptilian tail which at the tip began to produce flames. My legs grew in size and finished the destruction of my pants.

My neck soon began to lengthen as I yelled in pain; the orange scales continued their march towards my face. Yet another pressured feeling behind me occurred but this time it was because of two more limbs that grew and ripped the rest of my shirt off. They quickly formed into wings, blue in color, and I even brought one near my face to look at it. The flames from my tail began to ignite the items in my room and slowly became an uncontrollable fire that surrounded me.

By now I was seven feet tall and the only thing left to change was my head. I felt horns grow on top of my head as my face began to stretch uncomfortably into a snout, my human teeth all fell out in favor of new fangs. When I opened my eyes again they were light blue in color and I growled deeply.

I looked down at myself and was shocked to find that indeed I had become a Charizard…a fictional creature. What was more surprising now was that the fire around me didn’t hurt me but actually made me feel comfortable. I tried to speak but what only came out were deep growls.

I allowed myself to become accustomed to my new body for a minute but then, when I had thought my transformation had finished, I began to feel myself expand, much to my confusion. At first it was slow, maybe a short growth spurt, but it soon dawned upon me that I was taking up my entire room. It wasn’t long before cracks began to form all around me before the room could no longer contain me. I destroyed it with my growing body. I thought I would feel pain but I didn’t, it seemed that I was invincible!

People outside noticed the building shake and begin to expand before windows broke and concrete crumbled. The first thing they saw from me was my arms and then my body as I roared loudly. I had grown to the size of a 500 foot tall apartment, bigger than the one I had inhabited, and I finished destroying it with my new size. I took one step forward and it created a small earthquake that shook this part of the city. I smiled again as the small insects beneath me cowered in fear. I didn’t care who was good who was bad, who was poor, who was rich: no one was a saint in this world. I began to stomp through the city, destroying anything in my way. I used my tail to smash buildings, my arms to punch others and I discovered my ability to breathe fire which I used gracefully.

I was no longer a puny human, ridiculed for my small size and lack of strength, but now a giant reptilian monster out to teach them all a lesson. I now knew myself as a giant Charizard and nothing else. Maybe this WAS a dream, a good one. If this was a dream, please don’t make me wake up.

A request by Vipersrt1. This one was interesting to write, I had actually used a character from my Pikazilla story, check it out if you haven't read it yet!
